Home Insurance Claim

If someone has become injured on your property or if a violent storm destroys your home, you will need to file a claim with your insurance company. Remember, a homeowners policy is a contract between you and your insurance company. And there are rules and procedures that you and your insurer must follow. Read your insurance policy to see what your responsibilities are.

Knowing what to do after a home or personal property loss is key to avoiding further loss and getting your claim handled smoothly. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose.

Immediately After the Loss:

Losses can vary in severity. May your kitchen was damaged by a grease fire, or a thief took personal items from your home. Here are some guidelines on what to do after loss:

  • Remain calm
  • Report any crime (break-in, vandalism, etc.) to the police
  • Make sure everyone is ok and call 911 (fire, injury, etc.) if necessary
  • Phone your agent or company immediately
  • Make temporary repairs
  • Prepare a list of lost or damaged articles
  • If you need to relocate, keep your receipts
  • Get claim forms
  • Have an adjuster inspect the damage to your home

Reporting the Claim

You can report a claim in a several ways – contact your agent or contact the insurance company direct. But no matter how you report it there will be some information we’ll need to know:

  • Your information (name, address and accident involved)
  • Was the damage to your home fire, theft, etc.
  • Make sure everyone is ok and call 911 if necessary
  • If someone else is involved, exchange information, including:
  • A basic description of what happened
  • Severity of the damage
  • Estimated time / location of the incident
  • Information of anyone else involved (visitors, witnesses, etc) is also helpful.
